Sagittarius serpentarius

When asked the question, “What is your fifth favorite animal”, you never have an answer. I barely even think about what my favorite animal is, let alone my fifth. I could tell you my favorite colors though. I wont, but I could.

After a bit of deliberating and eventually not really caring all that much, I landed on the secretary bird. I would consider it to be my favorite bird, and my fifth favorite animal.

This is the secretary bird, or secretarybird, or Sagittarius serpentarius. It depends on how formal you want to be. Surely, the bird would prefer formality, just looking at the fashion.

So, the first thing that you most likely think of is, “Wow, that thing has long legs!”. You would be correct, it does have quite long legs, and it is not afraid to use them. While eating normal bird things normally, like bugs and crabs and things, they also hunt small rodents, frogs and even other smaller birds. Yeah they stomp on them, they stomp all over the grass to scare them out and they stomp all over their victims. They don’t like to get their wings dirty. The name is another thing that is peculiar, and it is fun because the connotation has changed but still fits the bird. When the name was first coined it was thought to reference British secretaries who wore black and gray tailcoats, not to mention the quills on the back of the head resembling pens being worn on the ear.

It also can resemble a modern secretary who wears way too much makeup, simply a timeless name. Regardless, this animal is strangly beautiful, like it looks like it was designed by a human. It looks like a pokemon. This animal fascinates me because it stands out in every aspect, great name, great looks, fun behavior. It’s got it all.
